VLN ensures justice for all Minnesotans-- not just those who can afford an attorney.

Every day, thousands face life-changing civil legal issues— like eviction, unsafe housing conditions, immigration, bankruptcy, custody disputes, and more— without the right to an attorney. Unlike in criminal court, there is no guaranteed legal representation in civil cases. For those living in poverty, that can mean navigating an overwhelming legal system alone.

This is where we help. Volunteer Lawyers Network is a 503(c)(3) that provides free legal advice, representation, education, and referrals to Minnesotans experiencing poverty. Between July 2023 to June 2024, 509 volunteer attorneys worked with 6,631 clients, helping them navigate a complex legal system to protect their rights, their families, and their hard-earned income. As a result of our work, tenants avoid homelessness, families are reunited, and people can find better employment. VLN partners with a broad network of local and national organizations committed to fighting poverty and advancing justice. Together, we’re ensuring that no one has to face the legal system alone.

Equality in representation: VLN connects low-income Minnesotans needing civil legal help with some of the best private lawyers in the state with no cost to clients.

Equality in access: Through our network of dozens of community and courthouse clinics, Minnesotans in need face the justice system armed with knowledge and the confidence that comes from having a lawyer on their side.

Equality in treatment: Many of our clients say they feel just like a paying client when they use our services. At the core of our volunteer training is respect for clients, their varying backgrounds, and the experiences they face.

Without equality, there is no justice.
