After a year of virtual runs, Mile in My Shoes (MiMS) was thrilled to welcome over 125 new Resident Members to the Mile in My Shoes family in 2021!

In March, our volunteer Run Mentors welcomed teams of new Resident Members into MiMS circles for the first time since the pandemic began. While our signature hugs may have been replaced with elbow-taps, and our bright smiles hidden behind masks, the thrill of those first running steps towards a fresh start was more present than ever.

This season brought many new beginnings for MiMS, including the launch of "Team Sally" this April at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in downtown Minneapolis. This was MiMS' very first team based at a residential treatment center, and were thrilled to see how our program became part of these Member's "recovery toolkit." In August, we launched two more teams, bringing the power of running and teamwork to more new populations - Team Centre, a re-entry center for men exiting incarceration in Fargo, ND, and Team Challenge, based at a residential treatment center exclusively for women in Northeast Minneapolis.

Your donation keeps us running as our teams train for their final races of the season, The Drumstick Dash 10K and Pi Run 5K at Lake Harriet and Burn the Bird 5K in Fargo, both on Thanksgiving Day (you can join us as a FundRacer, find out more here!).

NEW THIS YEAR: Score our newest "Run More Judge Less" swag by donating! Your $50 donation earns a RMJL buff and $100 a supersoft t-shirt. (See photos below)

About Mile in My Shoes
Our Mission: Running Together to Change Perceptions and Change Lives

Greetings from Mile in My Shoes (MiMS)! MiMS brings people from diverse backgrounds together through the power of running. Our teams of Resident Members and volunteer Run Mentors have run thousands of miles side by side, completing races from one mile to a marathon(!) in pursuit of our vision: to build bonds, boost wellness, and spark social action by bringing the power of running to people experiencing homelessness and other barriers.

How does MiMS work? We partner with residents in shelters and re-entry centers to build a running community that also includes a broad base of volunteers from throughout the Twin Cities. Runners meet three times a week for a group run, pairing up one Run Mentor to one Resident Member with the goal of increasing physical and mental fitness and forming uncommon bonds.

Since launching in 2014, MiMS has helped:

  • 700+ people experiencing homelessness, exiting the prison system, and recent refugees lace up a pair of new running shoes and run their first mile

  • 400+ members run a 5K race, 27 run a half-marathon, and 13 run a full marathon

  • 180+ members reach alumni status, completing between 20 and 200 runs each

  • Dozens of members connect to housing and employment opportunities

  • Give 12,000 hugs last year alone!
