Hello Friends,

I hope you’re as well as well can be during these painfully divisive times. One way I’m trying to take care of myself is by making more art and I hope you’re finding small ways to bring a bit of sunshine into otherwise dark, gray, and troubling times. But what can we do in a big way to challenge and change the harm we’re experiencing and seeing happen in our communities?

Well, I want to tell you something that was recently disclosed to me. Back in April, my granddaughter Charlie’s school notified parents that racist language was on the rise in classrooms. You can imagine how horrified I was to learn this and the fire it ignited in me to help in any way to mitigate this painful reality.

As a children’s book author, my immediate thought went to incorporating anti-bias and inclusive picture books into the curriculum—and that’s exactly what AmazeWorks offers. The AmazeWorks Elementary Curriculum is literature-based and empowers teachers and children to co-create classrooms of equity and belonging where children feel valued, respected, and connected by engaging in intentional, regular discussions about identity, differences, and bias. I fiercely support their work as a diverse picture book author, grandparent caretaker, community member, and member of their Board of Directors.

The government’s moving to dismantle the Department of Education which would result in cutting billions of dollars in federal funding to schools. Sadly, we’re already seeing our local school districts drastically tightening their budgets—with many unable to fund incorporating the AmazeWorks curriculum or continuing its use in the classroom.

Again, what can we do in a big way to challenge and change the harm we’re experiencing and seeing happen in our communities? We can donate to AmazeWorks to continue bringing identity-affirming curriculum to classrooms and help teachers create brave spaces where every child feels they belong. My goal is to raise $1,000, and your gift—no matter the size—makes a real difference.

Join me in helping create a future for our children where they feel seen, heard, and valued by donating today.

In community together and with much gratitude,
