As many of you know, I have been fostering dogs for awhile now, and I can't tell you how much joy I get from this small act of love. I truly love having a hand in seeing a dog go from a bad situation onto their loving forever home.
I myself have 2 rescue pups, Amelia and Gus. Gus was the second dog we ever fostered with NDLB, and he quickly became my "foster fail." I just fell so in love with him and I knew he was the perfect brother for our sweet Amelia.
Gus's story: We were sent 3 photos of dogs to foster and I chose one, but that dog had already been chosen by another foster, so they said "how about Gus?" There it was, a serendipitous twist of fate for us and our Gus.
Gus came with a handwritten note from a woman asking that we give an update once he settles into his forever home. About a month later I reached out to her and was told more about Gus's story. Her and her husband were driving around the abandoned mines on the KY/VA border and saw a dog hiding under an abandoned truck. They opened the door, gave a holler and Gus came running and jumped into the car. They told me he had a raw and scabbed neck where a collar would have been, and then I saw the photos. They broke my heart. These amazing folks nursed Gus for two months until they knew it was time for him to find his forever family. A rescue in their area reached out to NDLB and Gus was on his way to MN, and the rest is history!
Here's why Gus's story is important: NDLB is a rescue that spends time and money to bring Gus and many other pups to MN and it is NOT cheap. Costs include: a van, insurance on van, gas, then we're onto food, treats and toys. Then the biggest costs: all the vetting required. In Gus's case, all the required shots/vaccinations, one trip to the vet for neutering, another trip to treat a skin condition. As well as a "cone of shame," a collar, a leash, and heart worm & flea/tick meds.
As you can see, it is very costly to save a dog, and this is where you come in!
For a variety of reasons not everyone can foster. But, if you can afford to give even $5 it will aid in the costly process of helping dogs finding the loving family they have always deserved.
*This photo was taken about 10 minutes after we picked up Gus from NDLB. I don't think either if us knew our fate had been sealed. Welcome home Gus!
