Mitchell's Campaign for H2O for Life

H2O for Life is a service-learning nonprofit that educates youth about global water inequities. Our programming is two-fold; the first part is educating youth. We do this through free resources to classrooms like presentations by our staff (that’s me!) at schools, downloadable lesson plans (which I also help write!), mini-grants to support service projects (I serve on this committee, which is when we just give free money to those kind/giving angels, who are always spending their own money in the classroom, that we call teachers), and more (like that fellowship program I helped kickstart!). This gets students informed and excited about taking action! 

The second part of our program is an action, a service project, which supports a school or community somewhere in the world that needs help accessing clean water and sanitation. The exciting part about students working on a water project is that it isn’t just a water project! We frame the conversation around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 17 goals to make the world a better place by the year 2030, which we are currently not even close to achieving!).  But the students we work with get us closer to achieving them because these water projects are also public health interventions (SDG #3: Good Health and Well-Being), providing educational opportunities (SDG #4: Quality Education), reducing inequalities for young girls who are missing the chance to go to school and the historically marginalized people who have been impacted by a lack of access to necessities (SDG #5: Gender Equality & SDG #10: Reduce Inequalities), supports economic development (SDG #8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth), and so much more! This is a powerful way for students to gain an understanding of a global issue that impacts all of us and gives them a chance to actually do something about it.
