We are raising funds for the Duluth Community Garden Program's Education & Outreach Coordinator to plan, coordinate, and deliver agricultural education to Duluth Public School second grade classrooms this spring as part of our One Vegetable One Community program. Read more below!

The One Vegetable One Community (OVOC) program was started in 2011 to build community around growing and eating a featured vegetable each year. The 2023 vegetable of the year is: COLLARDS!

As part of the OVOC program, DCGP partners with Duluth Farm-to-School to deliver programming to all second grade Duluth Public School classrooms, reaching about 1200 students. This programming includes a vegetable tasting and a planting lesson, and each second grader goes home with a seedling of the featured veggie. This year's OVOC school programming will take place the week of April 24th. This program takes a large amount of coordination, from planning lessons, to gathering materials, to teaching in the classrooms. DCGP's Education and Outreach Coordinator puts in lots of time each year to make these lessons as impactful and fun as possible!

In addition to the school programming, the Education & Outreach Coordinator provides education and activities around the vegetable of the year at many community events, especially in the spring.

This program is typically grant funded, however we did not receive the grant funds that we had applied for in time for the OVOC school programming this spring. We are applying for additional grant funds for later this summer, but in the mean time, we are asking for your help! We are raising funds to cover staff time for the planning, coordination, and delivery of OVOC programming to Duluth Public Schools and community events this spring. Your donations will directly help a child plant a seed, right in their classroom! Can you help us meet our goal?

We are very grateful to our local business community for donating materials for this program. A big thank you to:

- OMC Smokehouse for donating collards for the vegetable tasting

- A+ Garden Center for donating soil for planting

- The Bookstore at Fitgers for donating books to be used in the lessons

We are also thankful to members of St Marks Giving Garden and Health Equity Northland for collaborating on the school lesson this year!

"We do a planting unit in Science and the One Vegetable, One Community project ties directly to our Science lessons. It is great to have the materials at school to plant, observe growth and changes, and then bring the plants home to continue the learning activities through the summer months! Thanks so much!"

-Doreen Ruhanen, 2nd Grade Teacher at Homecroft Elementary School

"Students look forward to the lesson each year and the teachers appreciate the OVOC Coordinator's help with teaching and planting!"

-Renee Willemsen, Duluth Farm to School Coordinator
