Build Wealth's Generational Scholarship

The Build Wealth MN's Youth Stabilization Program 'Generational Scholarship' Fund was established to help first-generation and/or low-income students avoid barriers that may hinder their access to secondary education. Some of these barriers include: 

1. Housing deposits for dorms
2. Funds for a laptop
3. The purchase of a required uniform for nursing or dental programs
4. Tools for automotive programs 

None of the above items are covered by financial aid and must come out of pocket from the students.

It is also common practice for colleges/trade schools to wait up to three (3) weeks into the semester before financial aid funds are released - including funds for textbooks. Most of our scholars do not have accessible funds to buy books so they tend to get behind in class or must read the book in the library for a few hours at a time…if the library even has enough copies! Our YSP Generational Scholarship awards are often used to buy course materials and other necessary supplies until financial aid funds are available. 

How our process works: 

Our goal is to teach financial literacy so our scholars can achieve financial freedom and build generational wealth. Scholars who have been involved with our Youth Stabilization Program and have learned our financial concepts, can apply for this scholarship. The scholarship committee then reviews the applications and decides, as a group, the finalists. 

Scholarship winners are chosen from our partner schools and commit to return to the program to speak, mentor, or in some way give back to their community. 

This scholarship was started by private funders; a retired teacher, school personnel and Build Wealth MN staff. With additional funds we can grant more scholarships and assist additional high school seniors with their choice of higher education.
