Strengthening our community by connecting neighbors of all ages!

At Southeast Seniors, a primary goal is to strengthen the Southeast Minneapolis neighborhoods through human connection. Despite the ongoing pandemic, 2022 has included many opportunities to do just that!

When a Como resident in her 90’s asked for occassional help with errands, we reached out to a Southeast Seniors volunteer who lives nearby. What started as an few outings to Cub and Home Depot developed into a special friendship. Despite nearly a 60-year age difference, the pair found that they had many things in common, including moving to Minnesota as adults and a passion for baking. This fall, they celebrated their birthdays together with homemade cake and tea!

Currently, 40 fifth graders at Marcy Open School and 40 older adults are participating in the Pen Pal program, swapping stories and jokes through handwritten letters each month. Through the Connection Club program, 5 University of Minnesota students are getting to know an older adult neighbor, sharing interests ranging from languages, food, philosophy and sports. One pair gets together to watch Sunday Night Football despite rooting for opposing teams!

Finally, our Share the Word event brought together over 40 community members on a beautiful July evening outside of the Pillars of Prospect Park. Attendees enjoyed an interactive performance by a drumming group from Smiling Drum Studio, appetizers, and learning more about Southeast Seniors. A welcome change after over two years of being apart!

Please contribute to Southeast Seniors so we can continue to facilitate these meaningful connections among neighbors, which make the Southeast community a better place to live, attend school, work and volunteer. Thank you so much for your generosity.
