The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad owns two heavyweight coaches, referred to as the "29" and "85". The coaches, used primarily for excursions, were built by the American Car and Foundry in 1912 for the Duluth and Iron Range Railway. These century-old cars spent most of their life transporting passengers between Duluth, Minnesota, and the Iron Range Cities of Hibbing and Virginia. Coach 29, also known as our 'Solarium' coach, was remodeled in 1939 and retains most of it's original interior. Coach 85 was converted into a crew bunk house in the 1970's and it's interior was completely altered. When the LS&M Railroad acquired them in the early 1980's their conversion to maintenance of way work required extensive restoration before being returned to passenger duties. Maintenance and ongoing restoration is required yearly on these venerable cars. The primary work we hope to accomplish this next year is to begin replacement of the seat upholstery of Coach 85.
