The Lake of the Woods County Historical Society was incorporated on November 8, 1965. Our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the history of Lake of the Woods County Historical Society. The Lake of the Woods County Historical Society is registered as a 501 (c) 3 with the state of Minnesota.

In 1978 plans began for construction of a museum and in 1980, we opened our doors. Lake of the Woods County Historical Society provides care and management of the collections, creates educational and informative exhibits, maintains a reference and resource library, conducts research, develops and runs programming for all ages, and welcomes visitors to learn and share their own stories of history in Minnesota’s youngest and most northerly county.

The Society is governed by a 7-member board of directors who serve three-year terms. One full-time executive director, one part-time assistant, and one seasonal assistant comprise the staff. The museum is grateful for the volunteers who help us in different projects and events at the museum year-round.
