Higher Ground Academy (HGA) was founded to provide a learning environment that fosters and appreciates the benefits of multiculturalism while providing a curriculum that prepares students to succeed in post-secondary education institutions.

With a student body that is 700 strong supported by over 100 full-time faculty and 25+ volunteers, HGA is dedicated to creating a socially committed, morally responsible and ethnically diverse learning environment. The Academy’s educational model cultivates the following characteristics:

  • leadership and faculty committed to excellence and accountability
  • a respect for students, individually and collectively
  • high expectations for achievement
  • teachers and staff dedicated to supporting students
  • a rigorous curriculum
  • ongoing measurement and assessment

Higher Ground Academy has been recognized repeatedly for the academic success of its students.
Ranked nationally by US News and World Report as one of its Silver Medal High Schools, Higher Ground Academy has also been named “a beating the odds school” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

To graduate, HGA Seniors Must Be Accepted at Post-Secondary Education Institutions.
Leadership and faculty at HGA believe strongly that their work as educators is not complete unless their students are pursuing education beyond high school.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Fund was established to make it possible for students in grades K–12 to earn tuition credits for their academic achievement throughout their years at Higher Ground Academy. The credits translate into tuition payments to post-secondary education institutions at graduation. This ability to shape their own futures coupled with the high expectations and support of HGA’s leadership, faculty, and parents empowers students to achieve. Many juniors and seniors at Higher Ground are enrolled in college level courses at nearby post-secondary institutions.

Most Higher Ground students and their parents do not have the financial means to pay for higher education. Yet it is widely recognized that post-secondary education is going to be critically important for those who will succeed in the 21st century workforce.

“Creating more post-secondary education graduates—holders of bachelor’s degrees associate degrees, and certificates—is a national economic need.”
