In St. Louis County alone, approximately 5,300 kids under the age of 18 are living in poverty (Minnesota Compass, 2020). This is often perceived as a household's inability to meet food and housing needs. However, families have many other needs that are frequently overlooked, such as clothing and shoes.

According to the Foot & Ankle Institute, sixty-five percent (65%) of kids wear the wrong size shoes. Wearing the wrong size shoes can impact a kid's ability to be mobile and exercise, potentially resulting in short to long term physical implications.

Shoes that are too small can cause pain, discomfort, nerve damage, and deformities. Shoes that are too big may cause overuse of foot muscles in attempts to maintain stability, which can be dangerous and result in unnecessary falls. Worn out shoes elevate the risk for heel pain, Achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains, and stress fractures. Further, it may prevent kids from playing, spending time with their peers, and participating in activities, which may impact their mental health.

AEOA is holding a 2022 Back to School Shoe Event to assist families with this necessity, and is seeking support of the community. All dollars raised will be used to purchase new pairs of shoes for local kids in need.

In addition to accepting monetary donations through GiveMN.org, AEOA also accepts cash and check donations, as well as new pairs of shoes. For questions or more information, please contact planning@aeoa.org or call (218) 749-2912.
