The first time I saw an NLAA show was in December 2019, when the holiday musical was Scrooge in Love. It was fun, silly, and serious all at once, and I remember thinking, “How wonderful that something like this happens right here in Ely.”

Since then, I’ve been part of a few events—usually because friends roped me in—and every time has been enjoyable. Whether it’s a poetry night, a dance event, or a musical, I love the buzz and excitement that fills the theater. There’s something special about seeing all kinds of people come together to create, laugh, and share something real.

One of my favorite memories is watching my husband, Jesse, dance with Molly Olson to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” during Dancing with the Ely Stars. And when he first appeared on stage as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, I’ll admit, I cried a little. Watching him perform was a mix of pride, joy, and pure amazement. That’s the kind of magic NLAA creates—it gives people the chance to try something new and surprise even themselves.

NLAA brings so many different kinds of art to Ely: dance, musicals, the written word, and visual art. Each show and event has its own spark of excitement. I often find myself at the musicals or larger events because of my schedule, but I know how much people in town love poetry nights, local art shows, and dance classes.

My clients who take tap lessons tell me how much they enjoy it, especially in the middle of winter when we all need something that keeps us moving and smiling. I think that’s part of what makes NLAA special—it reminds us that creativity and movement are essential, especially when the days are cold and dark.

It’s also been inspiring to see young performers grow through NLAA. I think of Asa, who recently starred in Matilda. She has grown so confident and poised since joining the theater. The kids work hard, and though it can feel overwhelming at times, you can see how much they love being part of it. That sense of accomplishment and belonging is something they’ll carry with them for life.

For me, NLAA is about community and joy. I give my time, energy, and money because I love supporting the people and programs that make this town vibrant. NLAA helps create a world where people can make and find their own happiness—on stage, in a class, or in the audience cheering for their friends.

When you give to NLAA, you help support an organization that brings out the best in Ely. Your donation keeps the doors open for the next group of performers, artists, and dreamers who are ready to share their gifts.

During Give to the Max, every dollar is matched through our $20,000 fund, which means your impact is doubled. Together, we can make sure there are even more moments that make us laugh, cry, and feel proud of this community we call home.
