It feels like a surreal time to be a journalist right now with what feels like a full-frontal assault on the first amendment by the current presidential administration. Jimmy Kimmel has been suspended because of what appears from the outside to be pressure from the FCC, the New York Times has been sued for $15 billion by the current president and the Pentagon has told any news organization that if they don’t report only approved content, they will revoke their media credentials and access.
And that was all just the week that I am writing this.
Obviously, as a small, community based news organization, we aren’t the New York Times or Jimmy Kimmel, and we don’t have access to the pentagon. But if large organizations can have their first amendment rights so brazenly disregarded, what is stopping anyone from treating us the same? Because we are a small, community based news organization, we wouldn’t survive.
And yet we persevere.
We may not be the “Newspaper of Record,” but the service we provide is no less important. We tell the stories of everyday life in a piece of St. Paul - keeping up with policies, people and decisions that impact your everyday life.
Support our work
I had someone tell me recently that when you believe something is important, you have to support it.
“Put your money where your mouth is,” they said.
That is what I am asking of you. We need your support to continue to bring the news of the West End and beyond to your doorstep every month. Free newspapers, it turns out, aren’t free to produce.
Our goal this year is to reach $5,500 in donations for our 55th anniversary.
$5,500 would produce one issue of the paper. Your gift to help us reach that goal would take some of the financial burden off of our advertisers, who continue to support our work through their monthly contributions.
It doesn’t take much - if only 1% of our readership donated $3/month, we would blow past our goal each year.
Please consider giving today to help us reach our goal and continue to bring stories about the people, places and policies affecting our community.
Thank you for reading and supporting us for the past 55 years - help us keeping it going for 55 more.
