As a child, I loved to read. Books helped me better understand myself and the world around me.
My books often mirrored my life right back to me. I read about characters who shared my name, racial identity, and family structure (mom + dad). But many stories were missing. For instance, I saw no families with two moms or two dads in my books. For much of my childhood, I didn’t know a family could look any different from mine. One of my childhood favorites: another Sophie with a family like mine!
A few years ago, I realized I was queer. To help me navigate this new identity as an adult, I turned to books. I read queer memoirs, fiction, history, and even picture books – desperate for the LGBTQ+ stories I didn’t have growing up.
I am endlessly grateful for the books that shaped my childhood. And, I wish I had access to more stories. I wish I had AmazeWorks.
In 2021, I started working at a nonprofit that helps all kids see themselves on the page. AmazeWorks uses picture books and storytelling to create classroom cultures of belonging for all. We know the power of storytelling to create more supportive, engaged, and empathetic classroom communities.
When I explored the AmazeWorks bookshelf on my first day at the office, I knew I was in the right place. I read Stella Brings the Family, about a child who brings her two dads to a school Mother's Day celebration. And When Aidan Became a Brother, sharing a trans child’s experience helping his parents welcome a new sibling into the family. For the first time in my life, I saw picture books about LGBTQ+ families and children. It felt healing, and I was overjoyed to join AmazeWorks and share these affirming stories with kids who need them.Stella Brings the Family

Books are instrumental in our learning, helping us discover who we are. AmazeWorks gives kids access to stories they need about all identities, families, and experiences.
I'm raising $1,500 for AmazeWorks to help every child find themselves on the pages of a book. Please consider supporting my campaign with a donation!
Thank you for helping me bring belonging to life through the power of reading. Any gift of any amount helps a child see themselves on the pages of a book. ❤️
With deep gratitude,
Sophie
