Full Steam Ahead

Eyes wide, jaw dropped, a brain creating new connections, and a curiosity is sparked! This is what impact looks like when a child engages in the hands-on STEM learning experience at the Minnesota Transportation Museum. MTM has existed since 1962 and exists to educate, inspire, entertain, and engage visitors by sharing the story of rail transportation history in the Upper Midwest region and how its evolution shapes our lives, culture(s), economy, and society. MTM's education program is Full Steam Ahead. In the 2026/2027 school year, MTM is raising funds for Full Steam Ahead so we can provide 100% free field trips for underserved students in our communities. MTM has found through surveys, cold calls, and discussions with educators, that transportation and program costs are the barriers to students attending field trips in St. Paul. MTM's goal is to remove those barries so the schools in our community that wouldn't otherwise have access to these STEM activities, get to experience hands-on experiences with real train cars, steam simulators, and can experience a tour to learn about how the history of the railroad can lead to workforce skills as an adult in carpentry, mechanical maintenance, safety, metalsmithing and more.
