First and foremost, Black Label Movement hopes everyone in our Black Label community and beyond is weathering the COVID-19 storm in the safest ways possible. In addition, we are sunsetting the use of "BLM" as our acronym in respect for the critical space held by Black Lives Matter and recognition of the Uprising that sprung from the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.  We will use simply Black Label or BLaM moving forward.

The COVID winter has been a surprisingly productive time for Black Label. We have produced two award winning original short films "A Dream of Touch when Touch Is Gone" and "cage(d)," a TED Talk for the 2020 TEDxMinneapolis, conducted a collaborative intensive with the NYC based Limón Dance Company and are now creating a new evening length work called "Canary, Crimson then Emerald" to premiere in April 2022 at the Cowles Center's Gooddale Theater in downtown Minneapolis. This week MADCO, a dance company based in St. Louis, MO, premieres its exhilarating commission by our artistic director Carl Flink entitled "Riding the Maelstrom." Black Label will give "Maelstrom" its Minnesota premiere in November 2022 as a part of the Cowles Center for Dance's inaugural Fall Forward Dance Festival. And looking even further forward, the Cowles Center has asked Black Label to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our SAGE award winning work "Wreck" with an exciting new remount in the spring of 2023!

Currently, Black Label is working with the social justice organization We Are All Criminals and incarcerated artist Sarith Peou towards a performance installation at the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota scheduled to open in spring 2023.  This project is supported by significant funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Warhol Foundation. Our film "cage(d)" is the first outcome from this important project.

Black Label also continues our groundbreaking collaboration with University of Minnesota biomedical engineer David Odde and the application of our fast modeling technique Bodystorming to David's cancer research and that of other scientists.

Professional dance artists are among the most vulnerable creatives in these times. Your donations go directly to fund the above projects and the artists that collaborate to create them.
