At Gatewood, we have a strong focus on environmental/outdoor education and social emotional learning. One way we have chosen to incorporate these two areas into our program is by creating a small animal care farm on site. Students, their families, school staff, and the local community all participate in the animal care process, from feeding to cleaning. Students groom, walk and read to the goats. They collect the chickens' eggs and dig up worms for them to eat!
We just welcomed a group of baby pigs to our farm family as well! They were a donation from a local farmer in Hastings. They will be an amazing addition!
The reality of having a program like this is that it is cutting edge and as such there are no ready made funding options that exist so we have had to be very creative in our work to sustain it. Our program relies on grants and donations to stay afloat.
We've created this easy way for people to give! Every little bit helps.
