Project Highlight: The Community Table at Bde Maka Ska
Client: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
Team: Fabrication by Concrete Pig
Services: Design and Fabrication
Year: 2023
Project Summary:
The pavilion at the north end of Bde Maka Ska is an iconic Minneapolis location. After the pavilion burned down in 2019, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board hired JXTA to design custom outdoor furniture for the rebuilt pavilion.
The Parks Board asked for a “Community Table” where people from all walks of Minneapolis life can share space. The Environmental Design studio developed over a dozen table designs, and the Parks Board ultimately chose a design by apprentice Isaiah Hunter. Isaiah’s angular, wedged-shaped table drew from the unique shape of the site and his own visual vocabulary.
JXTA hired longtime collaborator Keith Wyman of Concrete Pig custom furniture to fabricate the table and Keith hired Isaiah as his assistant. Through Keith’s instruction, Isaiah welded the table’s steel base and meticulously installed wood slats for the tabletop. They finished the table just in time for Isaiah to leave for architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Set against the lake’s edge, the table will host thousands of people every year as they take in one of Minneapolis’s best-loved spots.
