Asylum seekers have been forced to leave their homes and possessions in fear for their lives, and most of them arrive with no place to live, very little money, and years long waits for an overloaded immigration bureaucracy to decide their legal status.
For six months after applying for asylum status, asylum seekers cannot work as employees. Unless and until their applications are granted, they cannot receive benefits from state and federal government health, welfare and cash assistance programs. They discover that transitional housing is extremely limited. They need help finding English language lessons, food shelves, health care, schools for their children, their own education and training, transportation, and much, much more.
ACT-TC has succeeded in building networks of volunteers and resources to fill these gaps until our families reach independence. To a person they are committed to working hard to move past reliance on others.
