This is an unprecedented time, for our nation, our state and The Reading Center as well. While we pivoted to training our tutors to carry out online tutoring in the face of this pandemic, a second wave of the crisis is hitting our families. A month ago, ¼ of our tutoring families have lost income due to the COVID crisis. That number has grown as economic fall out widens. We have a scholarship fund, but it is not robust enough to absorb the new need of all of these current tutoring families who before, were able to fund their child’s tutoring independently.

In order to meet this newly emerging need, we must raise 3x as much for our scholarship fund in order to keep our existing students tutoring. That equals about $150,000. Last year, we provided scholarships to 18% of our students. This year, we are looking at the possibility that 50% of our current tutoring families will need a scholarship to maintain their live-changing tutoring.

When our tutoring students come to us, they typically are testing in the lowest 20th percentile of readers. Their schools have been unable to move them. This all changes when they begin our specialized instruction. Half of our students test out of the lowest percentiles after one year, and nearly all of our students make significant progress, when before they were stuck.

Please help us boost our scholarship fund in order to keep dyslexic children learning this year!
