Nurturing creativity.....Dance

Hip hop dance choreographed by Dance Artist Joelle Fernandez.

Duet choreographed by Natashia Otiso.

The Dance curriculum at South offers 5 dance classes (2 beginner & 3 company = 130-150 students). A 5th class was added this year and dance teacher, Ms. Nair, is grateful that she doesn't have to turn students away.  Students are taught to express themselves through dance,  choreograph their own works, plus social justice components (ie: Climate Change) are integrated into this program.  Classes include all demographics, including 8th graders to seniors.  The added funds would go towards (20-25) tap shoes, a ballet bar, costumes for performances and secured lockers for shoes (shoes are not allowed in class).

Senior Seamus Hegarty:   South High Potter and winner of "best in show" at Powderhorn Art Fair youth showcase.  The Ceramics program has grown from offering semester levels 1 and 2, to including advanced levels 3 and 4.   Advanced students are encouraged to take ceramics 4 ('advanced ceramics') as many times as they like to continue working on their portfolio and growing as a clay artist until they graduate.  Typically, 175 students per semester (30-40 students per section, 5 sections) are enrolled.  Ceramics teacher, Mr. Olson's goal with adding more wheels is not to grow the program overall (which is already at capacity), but rather to provide greater access to the amazing creative experience of throwing on the pottery wheel.  A single pottery wheel costs $800-$1,000.
