Your Books Have Arrived at the University of Mosul!

Update posted 5 years ago

We are happy to share some exciting news today!

Your 10,000 books from IARP's Books for Mosul Campaign finished their journey from Minnesota to Mosul, Iraq!  Yesterday, the books travelled from Erbil to the University of Mosul, where they were met by a team of local volunteers who moved the books into their new home at the university library.

Our friends in Mosul are so grateful for the books, which will be put to use immediately by students and faculty.

We sincerely thank all of our community members, donors, and volunteers who contributed to this project!

HELP IARP SEND MUCH-NEEDED BOOKS TO MOSUL

IARP has collected over 8,000 books to help restock the shelves of the University of Mosul library. We still need to reach our $15,000 goal to cover shipping and handling costs. In addition, we are sending 5,000 pairs of reading glasses from the Veterans for Peace chapter in Boulder, Colorado for the Mosul community.

We would appreciate any contribution towards shipping and handling – even a donation of $10 or $20 will help! Donate Now

Our books include much-needed academic resources in:

  • Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities (history, art, music, literature, classics, etc.)
  • Medical school texts and references
  • References (dictionaries, full sets of encyclopedias, etc.) with a 2003 publish date or newer
  • Journals (2016 date or newer)

We are so grateful to our volunteers and donors for the excellent books we have collected, and our friends in Mosul can’t wait to receive them

ABOUT THE BOOKS FOR MOSUL CAMPAIGN

Once a major center of learning in the Middle East, the library at the University of Mosul was destroyed by ISIS when they occupied the city in June 2014. The militants methodically burned nearly all of the one million books, manuscripts, and historic maps saving only a few chemistry textbooks that they used to build crude explosives. One of the finest libraries in the Middle East was burned to the ground.

We are holding a book drive for Mosul to restore the library as a credible resource center at one of the Middle East’s most important universities.
