The past year and a half have revealed the depth of health disparities in our country. Imagine how much harder all of the stress of a pandemic is for someone experiencing homelessness, lack of insurance, low income, and/or the barriers that come from being LGBTQ+, or a person of color! I joined the Board of the Family Tree Clinic because I wanted to do more to help, and I believe strongly in the organization's vision.

FTC is a leading nonprofit community clinic providing sexual health care and education to 22,000 people annually. The organization centers its work on people often pushed to the margins of healthcare. In 2020, 60% of clinic patients identified as LGBTQ, 36% had no insurance, and 44% lived at or below the federal poverty level. Most Family Tree patients are young, with 92% under the age 36. And across all programs, 57% of participants are Black, Indigenous or People of Color.

Family Tree also has:

  • the largest pediatric hormone care medical team in the upper Midwest
  • an entire department dedicated to meeting the sexual health and education needs of the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing communities, providing a rare but much-needed service to a large constituency.
  • a celebrated Health Education Department that presents to thousands of people each year in schools, juvenile detention centers, and to parents and community groups.

On Give to the Max Day 2021, Family Tree is moving into its new clinic in the heart of Minneapolis at 1919 Nicollet Avenue. Help launch the programs at the new clinic and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar.

If you want to call and talk about things I’d love to discuss more in detail (763-234-6625.) Thanks!
