The Capitol Pathways internship program has been created with the understanding that, to build a strong state, Minnesota government and the people who run it must be representative of the diversity of the state. Unfortunately, people of color are largely absent from legislative decision making in Minnesota today, a fact which is stubbornly slow to change even as the state’s population becomes ever more diverse.
With the long-term goal of making our government truly representative of our communities, the program seeks to open access to the Minnesota capitol to the next generation of leaders of color. Through this program, interns will build relationships with established capitol leaders, gain exposure to various kinds of careers in policy, and get real-world experience in career fields they would like to learn more about — and build a strong professional resume in the process.
Supporting this program means not only supporting a student of color who is currently enrolled in a two or four year institution to build power at the legislature, but supporting it means supporting a true change in the landscape of leadership in Minnesota. For too long, too many have been locked out of the process because formal networks were closed or inaccessible. Capitol Pathways is committed to valuing interns and opening doors through fully funding their internship experience. Be a part of opening doors, expanding networks of power, and creating a truly representative democracy.
“All too often decisions are made without the involvement of those impacted. The Capitol Pathways Internship Program will begin to shift this reality in Minnesota by bringing students of color into the inner workings of the State Capitol. With mentors sharing their expertise, networks, and lessons about the legislative process, the leaders of tomorrow will develop the skills to build a more equitable and sustainable Minnesota. I support the Capitol Pathways Internship Program because I believe it is a step towards shaping the Minnesota I want for my children, neighbors, and community.”
