It Takes a Community to Sustain a Co-op.

In a time when large chain stores dominate and small businesses struggle to stay afloat, community-owned spaces like the Los Alamos Co-op Market are more important than ever. We’ve always believed that Los Alamos deserves a mission-driven, locally-rooted grocery store—and time and again, you’ve proven that belief is true.

Earlier this year, Los Alamos faced a difficult reality: declining sales, intensified competition from Smith’s and Natural Grocers, leadership turnover, and employee retention issues—fueled in part by the ongoing lack of affordable housing. In early 2024, our Co-op was at real risk of closing its doors.

When the Co-op shared this news last spring, your response was incredible. Sales surged, member engagement soared, and the Co-op made it through summer and fall—thanks to your support.

But as time passed, momentum slowed. Customer visits dipped, and sales declined again.

We’re Not Giving Up—Let’s Grow Together!

This summer, we made big changes to improve accessibility, strengthen community connections, and reduce costs. We are determined to grow sales by meeting your needs, our operating costs are down, and we’re close to operating profitably.

And Yet, We Face An Urgent Challenge.

We recently uncovered nearly $65,000 in back taxes owed to the IRS, dating back to 2020. This liability—confirmed by a third-party CPA and our legal team—was addressed immediately to try to mitigate costly penalties. Paying for it all at once has significantly impacted our operating cash, destabilizing everything we’ve worked so hard to rebuild over the past year.

Here's the Good News: You Can Help—And Your Gift Can Be Doubled.

A generous member has offered to match donations, for a total of up to $10,000 in matching funds. This gives us a powerful start to a new fundraising campaign that will position the Co-op for a healthier, more secure future.

We are offering three ways to contribute:

• Make a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, the Cooperative Development Fund of CDS, by clicking the green "Donate" button to the right and selecting "Los Alamos" in the Fund Designation field. 
• Make a direct (non tax-deductible) donation by writing a check  to Los Alamos Cooperative Market and drop it off or mail it to 95 Entrada Drive, Los Alamos, NM 87544
• Round Up at the Register:  Every time you shop, you can choose to “Round Up” your total. Every cent adds up—and helps.

As its fiscal sponsor, the Cooperative Development Fund of CDS will use your gift to benefit Los Alamos Co-op Market in a manner consistent with the Fund's charitable purpose to support the wise use and development of cooperatively owned businesses.
