48 years ago, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL) was formed by a group of 14 lawyers to "confidentially aid and assist chemically addicted lawyers and judges in the state of Minnesota." Today, this program offers help to lawyers, judges, law students, staff who work on legal matters, and their family members, who are affected by alcohol, drugs, and other substance use disorders; depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses; stress and other life-related problems; and any condition which negatively affects the quality of one’s life at work or at home. This includes free counseling along with professional and peer support.
LCL is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with hundreds of volunteer members statewide and a committed staff and board. LCL’s membership includes those who have been helped by LCL and those who are concerned for the well-being of LCL clients and the legal profession. They are ready to help others by providing peer support and furthering LCL's reach and mission.
The longest-running program of its kind in the nation, LCL provides education to the legal profession at CLEs and other events, law school presentations, and by collaborating on curricula that includes information on issues of concern to the legal community, including diversity and inclusion, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. Our profession is on the front lines of everything that is difficult and traumatizing in our society and it is critical that we have all the support we need to do our best work to serve our clients and our communities.
LCL is at the forefront of the well-being efforts, including participation in the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs, the Institute for Well-Being in Law. LCL hosts regular support groups and helps legal organizations consider policies and practices to reduce risk and enhance well-being. For 45 years LCL has supported our profession. Help us celebrate with a donation today and help us continue to save families, careers, and live for 48 more years and beyond.
