In the land of 10,000 choirs, Spirit Song Choir is unique and innovative. In addition to live, in-person performances, concerts and sing-alongs, we share music through digital creations. Members from the Twin Cities metro area are joined by singers from around the U.S., and at least three continents. Everyone is a volunteer. Through song we seek to raise the spirits of our members, and those we serve.

Our Story

Spirit Song Choir is an ecumenical community where all are welcome! We began singing in September 2019, bringing live concerts and sing-alongs to the broader community as well as senior living communities in the East Metro Area.

Less than six months after our launch, the global pandemic struck. Suddenly, our singers couldn't gather and we couldn't reach our friends in senior living communities. We soon realized that not even a pandemic could keep us from singing.

Using the technology we had on hand - Zoom, digital mixers, a shortwave radio transmitter and lots of ingenuity - we created "WSSR: Spirit Song Radio," an old-time format variety show, written and created by a team of our members. This original program is filled with unique characters, lots of humor, songs and love, dedicated to our friends in senior living who experienced such isolation during the height of the pandemic. Debuting in November 2020, WSSR is now celebrating its first anniversary by releasing its 19th episode.

During the past 18 months, we have maintained and even expanded our membership through weekly virtual rehearsals, drawing singers from all over Minnesota and at least 12 states. Beyond rehearsing virtually, Spirit Song dove into the world of virtual recordings, with individual members recording their own parts on their phones, while listening to common lead tracks. These recordings were mixed together by one of our volunteers for the creation of "full choir" digital performances. To date, we have produced and shared six virtual choir performances, including "Let There Be Peace on Earth," which features more than 120 singers and musicians from around the world. Our Youth Choir is featured in three of these, as well as two of their very own. Inspired by the Italians, we also reached out to the world through our "Evening Song" offerings on Facebook. Evenings at 5:55 CST, Spirit Song members take turns offering the gift of a single song, inviting others to sing along, offering support, connection and hope to our listeners.

Why We Give - And How You Can, Too!

The volunteers of Spirit Song Choir are motivated by love - love for singing, love for sharing, and love for those among us who are often the most isolated. We love what we do and that's why we continue to give our time and talents to Spirit Song Choir. We are looking forward to returning soon to live performances in the broader community, especially in senior communities, as well as continuing the production of our radio shows and virtual choir recordings.

Our work is entirely funded by donors like you: that is why we're not afraid to boldly ask for your support! Spirit Song needs to raise $5,000 to keep our work going over the next year. This $5,000 will go directly into operations:

  • For sheet music, so that every Spirit Song Choir volunteer can continue to participate either virtually or live at no cost. We do not charge membership fees because we believe that cost should not be a barrier keeping someone from singing.
  • For equipment, such as microphones, speakers, music stands and musical accessories. Sound equipment is one of our biggest and most important expenses. When we travel to performance sites, we rely heavily on being able to have access to sound equipment on location, which may not always be available.
  • For risers, so that our in-person performances provide adequate and safe platforms for a large choir. With the use of portable risers, we can take our singers to the communities we serve and give our audiences live surround sound from the whole choir.
