KRSM Radio 98.9 FM

KRSM 98.9 FM is a community radio station located in the Powderhorn neighborhood of South Minneapolis. We provide a hyper-local platform for amplifying the voices, stories, and cultures that make our neighborhoods vibrant and strong. Our focus is on communities that are marginalized, misrepresented, or erased by traditional media—and we’re proud to be changing that narrative every day.

KRSM’s programming reflects the true diversity of our city. We air shows in six languages (English, Spanish, Somali, Ojibwe, Hmong, and Haitian Creole) and feature 12 hours of Indigenous-led programming each week. Our hosts—73% people of color and 58% women—bring authentic perspectives and local expertise to topics ranging from community organizing and entrepreneurship to education, mental health, politics, and music.

KRSM is not just a radio station—it’s a training ground for community media makers.Each year, we provide:

• Over 200 free media skills training classes

• Recording equipment for loan to emerging storytellers

• A studio equipped with professional editing software

• Hands-on learning through our Student-Powered Radio, Community DJs, and Southside 60 programs

These resources help community members gain experience in broadcasting, journalism, and audio production—paving pathways toward meaningful careers and stronger civic voices.

Rooted in Collaboration

KRSM was designed in partnership with Hope Community, Voices for Racial Justice, Little Earth of United Tribes, Main Street Project, and the Native American Community Development Institute, and was built by a volunteer base of over 100 neighbors. We launched in 2017 and continue to broadcast from our home inside Pillsbury Creative Commons at 3501 Chicago Avenue South.
