GreenStar Food Co-op FLOWER Program

GreenStar’s healthy food access discount program, FLOWER, is designed to make natural, wholesome food and eco-friendly products more affordable to all members of our community.

FLOWER - Fresh, Local, Organic Within Everyone’s Reach - helps reduce cost barriers by giving individuals enrolled in qualifying assistance programs a 13% discount on purchases, access to Double Up Food Bucks, and support for member equity payments through GreenStar’s Solidarity Fund.

The seeds for FLOWER were planted during conversations and concerns from members about making GreenStar more affordable to lower-income individuals and families. After all, access to nourishing foods should be a right, not a privilege. When GreenStar launched FLOWER in 2010, it was one of only a handful of food co-ops addressing economic barriers to the nourishing, healthful foods found almost exclusively at their stores. Since its inception, FLOWER has grown wildly - eligibility criteria have expanded, and the program has become more than a discount.

 Continued growth of FLOWER offerings, coupled with increased food insecurity in our area, has seen FLOWER enrollment grow from an average of 425 individuals annually in its first decade to over 750 FLOWER participants annually in this post-pandemic era. Over time, more than 3,200 individuals have participated in FLOWER. In 2025 alone, over 899 individuals saved $214,202.40 with the FLOWER discount, redeemed $50,200 in Double Up Food Bucks, and over 120 individuals’ first and continuing equity payments were paid by GreenStar’s Solidarity Fund.

We’re excited to launch a new partnership with the Cooperative Development Fund of CDS, a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to start and grow cooperatives, which allows GreenStar shoppers to make a tax-deductible donation to our Co-op to help offset the cost of the FLOWER discount and further support GreenStar and our neighbors. We are committed to strengthening our community and growing our cooperative by ensuring the fresh, local, and organic foods are within everyone’s reach, and we are so grateful for your support.
