"Everything I needed to be successful was given to me though this program. The location made it easy to get around by walking or low cab cost. Budget setting was helpful as I had been on my own since 13 and never knew how to budget or set goals. Now I know what I can afford each month so that I could leave shelter before my time ended to a stable living arrangement for my children and myself. Through PAH’s support, I realized this is the way people are supposed to be treated - they showed me humanity!"  – Ceola, previous shelter guest

According to Reference.com, (Homeless) Shelters are important because they keep people from harm. Shelters give people a feeling of well-being and boost their will to live. Having a shelter is also a basic human necessity, in addition to food and water.  Without shelters, people become exhausted and often lose their will to live due to prolonged exposure to the elements. Having a shelter therefore generally improves a person's quality of life. When considered as a home, a shelter is also where family members interact and where children are raised properly. Since shelters provide a sense of security, dwellers can better focus on the other aspects of their lives. Shelters also provide privacy and encourage independence from the community.

Partners for Housing provides various levels of housing year-round: emergency residential shelter for women and families for up to 90 days, transitional housing which provides supportive services and rental assistance for up to 24 months, and low-cost housing options based on financial need.  The goal for the nonprofit is to provide intensive help in overcoming barriers which prevent a household from being housed, which leads to breaking the cycle of homelessness and become stably housed.  This is most impactful for the significant number of children impacted by homelessness on any given night.

People come to our shelters in crisis, with no where else to turn. Our shelters: Theresa House and Welcome Inn in Mankato, MN and Union Street Place in St Peter, MN provide safe sleep and much needed support for 25 households each day, prioritizing single women and families with children as a calm in their storm.

“We continue to see a large need for our emergency shelter, as well as transitional housing options, due to the lack of what is considered affordable housing by the state.” said Jen Theneman, Executive Director, “Until we see income and affordable rent aligned, we will continue to see working families struggle to make ends meet in our community.  Our shelters provide safe respite for these families and through our programming, clients improve self-sufficiency and confidence, overcome hurdles that prevent them from being housed and connected to other community resources to help them gain and maintain the housing stability needed for long-term success.”
