MJF agencies and volunteers are adapting to the new circumstances caused by the coronavirus:
- Students have dedicated hours to volunteering with local elections nationwide. They have also put many hours towards tracking prejudicial language used in housing deeds in counties in Minnesota. Our students have also been working from home to help agencies continue to address health law issues in the community.
- MJF students are also volunteering remotely by answering questions from callers on our partner agencies' hotlines; some students are answering questions from Minnesota renters on a tenant hotline, and others are answering calls on a hotline set up to assist inmates applying for prison medical release due to COVID-19.
- One volunteer, at the compliance and privacy department in the California healthcare system, has been obtaining 1135 waivers, which are necessary to temporarily waive or modify certain Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP requirements to ensure that sufficient healthcare items and services are available to meet current needs. It provides flexibility for healthcare facilities to provide care in areas that traditionally would not be allowed.
- One volunteer will be working at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York (OCME) for the summer, investigating COVID-19 related deaths in New York City and enacting emergency contingency plans to help mitigate the impact, including setting up temporary morgues. As a Law Intern, the student will report directly to the General Counsel, assisting in the day-to-day work of the Legal Department. She will be working with the OCME to respond to the global COVID-19 health crisis and the legal implications of a large number of deaths in an international city. The funding for this summer position was made available through fundraising efforts.
