Franciscan Sisters in Mission

The Franciscan Sisters have been engaged in mission activities outside the United States since 1962, when a group of sisters began a mission in Peru. In the ensuing years, sisters went on to serve in other Latin American countries: Bolivia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Colombia, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Mexico. In Africa, Franciscan Sisters served in Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon and Zanzibar as well as shorter service in other countries. Franciscan Sisters respond to the needs of the people wherever they are called to serve, witnessing to the love of Jesus Christ as they walk side by side with people on the margins.

San Rafael, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

Since 2003, the Franciscan Sisters have been leading a mission in a very poor area in the Diocese of Nuevo Leon. They serve the widespread Parish of San Rafael and train catechists and lay leaders to provide spiritual and pastoral care. Much of their work and outreach is centered on the youth. Teen missionaries are trained to visit the villages during Holy Week and to lead youth encounters. To address the need for education, especially for girls from the outlying villages, the sisters started Casa Franciscana, where students live in community with the Franciscan Sisters and receive room and board and other services so that they can attend high school in San Rafael.

Saltillo, Mexico

Sister Isa Berrones has opened a house of hospitality to provide support to students attending university in Saltillo. This new program is housed in a building provided to the sisters rent-free by the diocese. Following the model of Casa Franciscana in San Rafael, Casa Maria invites college students to live in community with the sisters and participate in daily Franciscan prayer and spirituality. The program is underway with a couple students with room to accommodate up to 10 in the future. We’re grateful for this new opportunity to expand the mission to help women at the college level.

Donations through GTTM support the missionary work of our sisters and the advancement of girls and women through education. Be assured of our grateful prayers.
