Join Coldwell Banker in raising funds to support Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota’s Disaster Response and Crisis Recovery Fund!

Habitat Minnesota works to provide and preserve homeownership opportunities across Minnesota by bolstering the work of the 28 local Habitat organizations serving communities across the state.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying economic crisis, Habitat has been working to make it possible for Habitat homeowners to be able to stay in their homes by making adjustments to their mortgage payments so their homes continue to be affordable. Habitat has had to cancel fundraising events and close ReStore retail stores, greatly impacting their ability to meet the housing needs of communities across Minnesota.

The Habitat Minnesota Disaster Response and Crisis Recovery Fund will keep Habitat for Humanity stable into the future. Our state was already facing an affordable housing crisis before COVID-19, with one in ten households in the state spending more than half of their income on housing. This fund will allow Habitat to be ready to respond to the additional housing needs that arise as we work to recover from this crisis.

A big part of the affordable housing crisis is that Minnesota has one of the highest racial homeownership disparities in the nation, with a 26% gap in homeownership rates between white households and black households. This is due to our state's history of racist lending practices combined with persistent income inequality.

Homeownership is one of the biggest ways that families are able to build generational wealth, something families of color have historically been blocked from. Families, particularly families of color, must be able to unlock the key to changing their family’s outcomes for generations: homeownership. Habitat for Humanity, serving households earning up to 80% Area Median Income (AMI), is well-situated to address the racial and economic equity in housing statewide. Minnesotans earning at this level have a hard time entering the homeownership market.
