Last year, the girls' bathroom at Rwemiyenje Primary School in Southwestern Uganda was in a sorry and unsafe state, and our donors jumped to action. The girls are now enjoying their new showers and pit latrines.

Now the 125 boys in the school boarding section at Rwemiyenje need a new water and sanitation facility. These boys are using a two-stance pit latrine for human waste disposal. This latrine is located about 15 meters away from the dormitory.

They also have a separate temporary makeshift shower with walls made out of old iron sheets and an unconcreted floor. The small makeshift shower can barely accommodate 5 boys at a time and is in a deplorable state too.

The pit latrine (see below) has no hand wash facilities and is about one foot away from filling up to the brim!

Poor sanitation and hygiene puts children at risk of childhood diseases and malnutrition that can impact their overall development and learning. While some parts of the world have improved access to sanitation, millions of children in poor and rural areas have been left behind. Only 27.5% of Uganda's rural population has improved access to sanitation facilities. The supply of safe water and hand washing facilities are essential for personal hygiene.

As a result of these poor sanitary conditions, there are many cases of illnesses, including diarrheal diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and intestinal worm infections in children. These illnesses, of course, affect their class attendance.

What is needed? There is an immediate need to construct sanitation and hygiene facilities at this school. The facilities shall include a 4-stance Ventilated and Improved Pit latrine, two showers and hand wash facilities with running water.

Background

Sanitation is the safe collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of human waste. Proper sanitation promotes health and improves the quality of the environment and, thus, the quality of life in a community. On the other hand, personal hygiene is the practice of keeping oneself clean and free from germs and diseases. Personal hygiene is essential for good health and to prevent illness.

Schools have a central place in the health of a community. Inappropriate hygiene in schools can cause many diseases. Schools become places where diseases are likely to be transmitted if there are no school sanitation and hygiene facilities or if they aren’t maintained and used adequately. Sanitation is essential for all, helping to maintain health and increase life spans. However, it is crucial for children. Around the world, over 800 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diarrhea-related diseases caused by a lack of access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. In addition, diarrhea causes children to lose their appetites, leading to malnourishment. Limited access to sanitation has become such a worldwide problem that 1 in every 4 children suffers from stunted growth. This leads to irreversible physical and cognitive damage.
