Not only was the creation of the Boundary Waters an integral part of Dorothy’s story, it is, and continues to be, an integral part of Minnesota’s story.

The creation and management of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) was and still is a controversial process. Like any controversial issue, understanding the history is paramount in developing an informed opinion on it.

By illustrating the creation of the BWCAW through a new exhibit featuring 25 historic objects, the Dorothy Molter Museum hopes to:

  • Inform visitors of the decades-long and ongoing process of creating and managing the BWCAW as a federal wilderness,
  • Inspire visitors to learn more about this unique region’s attributes – political, ecological or otherwise,
  • Involve visitors by sharing ways they can be an active participant in the processes that affect the BWCAW and other wilderness areas.

Through this new exhibit that will help celebrate the Museum's 25th anniversary season in 2018 visitors will gain an understanding of how the establishment of the Boundary Waters as a designated federal wilderness is an important part of the area’s past, present, and future.

We invite you to "Donate your way up to Dorothy's" and help us make this exhibit a reality!
