Macalester-Groveland and Highland neighborhoods in St. Paul will be coming together this summer to read How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi in honor of George Floyd. Our goal is to educate ourselves about racism and oppression in our communities and to share a common reading experience that allows us to begin more long-term conversations with neighbors.

Zoom sessions discussing the book will take place in the second half of July. Learn more and register for the sessions here.

Everyone is welcome to participate, though a recommended donation of $20 helps support the facilitators and interpreters who will guide the discussions. If you would like to donate more than $20, please feel free to do so; 100% of donations will go towards compensating facilitators and interpreters.

If interested in participating, please also fill out this survey to help organizers gather feedback for planning sessions (i.e. timing and accessibility needs).

Organizers have already confirmed 8 incredible discussion facilitators, and are working on adding a few more. Shá Cage, EG Bailey, Harry Waters, Shannon Gibney, Margaret Vaughan, Arleta Little, Karin Aguilar-San Juan, ShaVunda Brown, and Damon Shoholm have all agreed to lead discussions of Kendi’s book and of actions we can take to create change in our communities.

This activity is funded in part by the High Winds Fund at Macalester College, the West Summit Neighborhood Advisory Committee, and the Macalester-Groveland Community Council.
