We need help to create ADA accessible lodging spaces in our existing buildings. Our current artist suites are located on a 2nd level, accessible only by a narrow staircase. We are working towards converting some under-used office/studio space into an ADA accessible and family-friendly space for artists-in-residence and visiting instructors. The rising expense of lodging on the North Shore has become a barrier for some artists and instructors that work with the Grand Marais Art Colony. To offset these costs we created a three-bedroom artist suite, offered to artists at a significantly reduced rate. We would love to be able to expand on our humble offerings to ensure that we can host artists with families and accessibility needs. This project will entail installing a shower and other bathroom fixtures, building walls to separate sleeping spaces and updating our entrance ramp.
The main goal of this project is to be able to host a more diverse community of instructors and artists-in-residence, as well as to be a more inviting residency option for artists with families.
To realize this medium-scale capital investment project we are depending on individual and organizational giving, as well as seeking grant funding.
