The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad Excursion Train provides access to the beautiful St Louis River Estuary as it travels along the first railroad corridor into Duluth, dating back to 1870.  The railroad operates vintage equipment to provide passengers with the experience or rail transportation as it was in the 19th Century.  This is a one-of- a-kind, unique railroad excursion ride, a scenic train experience full of history and beauty.

The main focus for our 2021 GiveMN Fundraiser is to raise funds for repairs/upgrades to our GE Engine 46.  The engine was built in Erie, Pa, in 1946 and was celebrated at a 75th Birthday Party at the LS&M RR Station this fall of 2021.

Engine 46 was originally purchased in 1946 by the Flambeau Paper Co in Park Falls, Wis.  It remained in Park Falls until 1986 when acquired by the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad Company.  The original paint scheme for the 46 was yellow with black stripes.  It has since gone through 2 color changes, yellow with red trim being the current color.

Most maintenance is done locally by volunteers, however, some work needed to remain in compliance with the Federal Railroad Administration will require commercial resources to complete the work. Some of which is listed below:

  1. Replacement of all 4 wheels
  2. Maintenance of traction motors
  3. Inspection and replacement, as needed, of wheel and drive system bearings
  4. Inspection and repairs, as necessary, of brake system
  5. Inspection and repairs, as necessary, of truck equalizer beams & springs
  6. Inspection and repair, as necessary of side rod bushings and bearings

Please consider a generous donation so we may purchase materials and secure the services to assist with these necessary repairs. This will allow us to continue to provide an entertaining, educational and safe experience for our customers.
