Banyan Community is a place-based nonprofit rooted in the Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Through no-cost educational, enrichment, and family support programs, Banyan helps youth build the academic, social-emotional, and life skills needed to thrive. From after-school and summer learning to mentorship, college and career readiness, and community support, Banyan works alongside youth and families to create opportunity, belonging, and a stronger community for all.
Through year-round afterschool, summer, middle school, high school, and family programming, Banyan walks alongside youth and families over the long term, creating consistent relationships and trusted support systems that help young people grow in confidence, belonging, and opportunity. Our programs support students from early childhood through post-secondary pathways, helping youth strengthen academic skills, explore future careers, prepare for college or trades, and build healthy connections with peers and caring adults.
Banyan serves one of the most culturally rich and resilient communities in Minneapolis. Many of the youth and families we serve face barriers tied to poverty, educational inequities, housing instability, food insecurity, and the growing pressures immigrant families have experienced over the past year. In response, Banyan remains a safe, welcoming, and trusted community space where families know they belong and where youth can learn, grow, and feel supported.
Today, approximately 170 youth and 115 families participate in Banyan programs. Nearly all participating youth are students of color, with many coming from immigrant and multilingual households. Despite the barriers many students face, Banyan youth continue to achieve incredible outcomes. Over the years, Banyan has maintained a 98% high school graduation rate among participating students, with many youth continuing on to college, trade programs, and meaningful career pathways.
At Banyan, we believe strong communities are built through relationships, consistency, and opportunity. Whether a student is receiving homework help after school, participating in leadership development, preparing for their first job interview, or simply sharing a meal in a space where they feel safe and valued, Banyan is committed to ensuring young people and families have the support they need to thrive.
Your support through Give to the Max Day helps sustain no-cost programming for youth and families in South Minneapolis and ensures Banyan can continue creating opportunities for learning, connection, and long-term community impact.
Thank you for investing in the future of South Minneapolis youth and families.
