The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is, and will hopefully continue to be, an important ecosystem for moose, loons, bears, fish, trees, and plants. It is a special wilderness that provides canoeing, camping, hiking, swimming, and fishing opportunities, among other things, to those who visit. The water is clean enough to drink straight from the lakes, the air is fresh, the night sky is brightened by the moon and the stars, and the sounds you will hear are occasional and natural. Best of all, this public wilderness offers an affordable vacation experience to all.
The BWCAW is currently threatened by the proposed Twin Metals (Antofagasta) copper-nickel (sulfide-ore) mine on the very edge of the wilderness. Scientific and economic studies have shown that water, air, noise, and light pollution from this mine will cause irreparable harm to the the lifelong inhabitants and natural resources of this ecosystem, deter human visitors from recreating in the area, and be financially detrimental to the wilderness outfitters, youth camps, guides, outdoor gear stores, canoe manufacturers, and towns that rely on eco-tourism business.
Please join me in protecting and saving this special place!
Funds that are raised go directly to the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters.
Sincerely,
John Sand
