Hi Friends and Family, I am in my 15th year at Jewish Community Action and a lot has happened in this time! I've seen JCA shift and move as an organization, as a membership and as a staff many times. However, I have never seen us shift from our dedication to our mission and vision, of being a voice for social change in the Jewish Community. We have consistently worked in meaningful partnerships and alliances with multiple communities, not just in the Jewish community, but alongside multiple communities, and intersecting communities. I am lucky that I get to use my day in, day out time toward this. I am lucky that I get to work with a team who I truly enjoy, admire and respect. I am proud to be a part of this organization, as the Education and Membership Programs Manager, and also, as a member.

Like JCA, my work has shifted over the years too. I started out as a community organizer doing our immigrant rights work and youth organizing. I was able to play a key role in the organizing of the aftermath of the Postville, Iowa raids in 2008, and help guide our response as a community and as a partner for change. Later, I realized we had a real need to help address a two fold issue -- people were feeling disconnected from community, and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the issues happening in our community and our world. In identifying this, the Tzedek Institute was born. It is now a key educational component of our work that helps members learn about community organizing from a Jewish lens, while building meaningful connections with each other, and seeing their role in the context of social change. Alumni have gone on to contribute to our multiple social and racial justice campaigns and work through JCA, and through the broader community. We have over 200 alumni from the program and it is one of my absolute favorite parts of my job.

And, once again, in addition to the educational work I do, I will be shifting into a new role this fall, working on Membership involvement programs, that will emphasize not just fundraising, but also ways to bring people together around the important issues we work on, and in ways that are sustainable for the long haul.

Thank you for reading a bit about me and my role at Jewish Community action! I know that many of you are already members, many of you already contribute financially and with your time and dedication, and I appreciate all of that. If you have not supported our work in the past, I invite you to now as well. If you are able, I ask you to make a contribution for Give to the Max Day, Thursday, Nov 17th. Thank you for your support!

p.s. because I'm an organizer, if you are interested in being part of the next Tzedek Institute cohort, we are just beginning to form the next group, and I would love to have you participate if you have not in the past, lauren@jewishcommunityaction.org or my cell for more info. It is open to the community at large and there is not one "Tzedek Institute" type, its not exclusive to any specific identity/ties or anything else, truly a lovely experience and would love to have any of you join.
