Folks, we've already exceeded our goal--raising $2,087, $350 here and $1737 elsewhere which was directly donated to the foodshelf.
Right now it seems like people might get 65% of their normal amount--a still devastating cut. And who knows how long this shutdown will drag on for.
Starting on November 1st, our fellow Americans--our friends, neighbors, co-workers, strangers, acquaintances--will not receive their money from SNAP due to the government shutdown. We are talking about 41 million people (one in eight people in America) who will face increased hardship. It is bleak out there. It is damn near the apocalypse for many folks.
Everyone deserves dignity. Everyone deserves to have enough to eat and we have a responsibility to help those in need (Isaiah 58:7).
This issue is personal to me. As a graduate researcher, an area of focus is improving the SNAP program to make it work better for everyone (see pic of me from a recent conference where I presented on my work). That's why I am committing to match at least the first $200 of donations (hey, it's a lot of money for me as a grad student). If you want to contribute to the matching side of things, please let me know.
This particular fundraiser is for Groveland Emergency Food Shelf. You can read more about them here. I created this page because it seemed like the easiest way to take care of the logistics. But if you'd prefer to donate to a shelf closer to you and your community, send me a message and I'll match your contribution.
I don't know when this government shutdown will end, but I set this campaign to end on November 21st (Give to the Max Day in Minnesota). There's no way the government will remain shut down that long right? Right??
