Preserve the Legacy of Intermedia Arts (1973–2017)

Help safeguard a vital piece of Minnesota’s creative history.

From 1973 to 2017, Intermedia Arts Minnesota (IAM) served as a dynamic hub for innovation, activism, and community-based art. Through its multidisciplinary approach, Intermedia Arts amplified voices often left out of the mainstream—youth, immigrants, women, LGBTQ+ artists, and artists of color. Its legacy is one of radical creativity and cultural impact.

Today, that legacy is at risk of being lost.

Why We Need Your Help

Minnesota Media Arts has entered into a Media Preservation Collection Care Agreement to assess Intermedia Arts’ storeroom of media assets, artist and project promotional materials, and vital organizational records. This collection spans decades of creative output—video, audio, photography, posters, ephemera, and internal documentation that tell the story of an arts institution that changed lives.

We’re undertaking a critical first step:

  • Stabilizing the collection

  • Conducting box-level photographic documentation

  • Preparing the archive for safe transport and future sorting

This foundational work will lay the groundwork for long-term preservation, historical access, and public engagement. Ultimately, this project honors the legacy of Intermedia Arts and ensures it remains accessible for future generations of artists, researchers, and community members

A History Worth Preserving

Intermedia Arts cultural contributions were recognized early on—collections were donated to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1994 and 2004, but much of this recent story remains untold and unarchived. This campaign supports the next phase in preserving the full breadth of Intermedia Arts’ impact.

Your Support Matters

Every dollar raised helps cover costs for: Archival supplies, Photo documentation, Collection assessment and stabilization, transport and secure storage for future sorting.
