Sanford Middle School needs books! Real paper books where you turn the page, can't put it down, and dog-ear the corners to save your sacred spot.
This year our middle schoolers started a new Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) program at Sanford where they just straight-up read real books three days a week, first thing in the morning, for 30 minutes at a time.
The teachers are into it, the kids are into it, I'm super into it as the parent of a 7th grader -- heck, even my 7th grader loves it!
The only limitation is that Sanford needs more books. High-interest, age-appropriate, can't-put-em-down books.
Our goal is $6,000, which will go straight toward books and bookshelves (where to put all the books these kids are reading is a welcome, unexpected challenge that came with the popularity of this new program!) with titles chosen through teacher and student input.
Give what you can -- truly, any amount gets us closer. And if you've got a book-geek in your world who wants more kids reading, send this to them with the invitation to support the next gen becoming avid readers.
A good book can change your life -- and we've got an opportunity right now to expand a popular program that gets our children away from screens and transported into all kinds of new worlds with delicious reading.
Let's seize it -- and fund it.
Warmly,
Allyssa Woodford Hughes
parent of Walt Hughes, 7th grader at Sanford
