One Voice was the first group i joined when I moved to Minnesota: I had no idea that I had signed up for something unlike any choir I had sung with before. One Voice has a mission of "Building community and creating social change by raising our voices in song." Lots of groups and organizations will say that they prioritize community and are committed to social justice, but I have seen many fall short of those goals largely without awareness that they have missed the mark. One Voice is different. Recently we have had smaller representative groups of the chorus sing the National Anthem at sporting events for the Lynx and the Gophers, at events supporting queer youth, the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts 40th anniversary celebration, an Out in Our Schools event in collaboration with the Gay Straight Alliance at Burnsville High School, and the 2024 GALA Chorus Festival. Between performances, singers engage in community with each other through weekly rehearsals, Saturday "retreatsals" which include a social often potluck lunch, and organized fun outings to get to know each other in and out of music-making.
Advocacy has always been important to me, but I had no idea that music and performing itself could truly be a meaningful way to stand up for my beliefs. One Voice has given me a community personally, but it has also shown me that each singer is part of what makes One Voice effective in making statements and empowering other people in the community to advocate for themselves and the causes they hold dear. It takes one peble to make ripple after ripple in a stream, and in my 6th season with One Voice I have seen how even if I'm a peble I can be part of a community like One Voice, and even if our concerts are just pebles the potential for the ripples to spread out is unlimited.
Please support One Voice Mixed Chorus's mission to make a difference through sharing our music, and come join us at our next concert on November 15th if you are able to do so.
