Your financial support will allow us to continue to work toward improving visual outcomes of serious retinal disease.

Retinal disease is a common cause of serious visual loss. It can affect people at any age - from premature infants to the elderly. While there have been remarkable advances in the management and treatment of these disorders over the past 30 years, much work remains. Currently, macular degeneration is the most frequent cause of serious vision loss for those over 65, while diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of visual imparement in midlife. Ongoing clinical and basic research is crucial in our efforts to reduce the incidence of serious visual loss in our population. The physicians of VitreoRetinal Surgery, P.A., have been involved in retinal research and education for many years. This effort is an integral part of our practice. VRS has been involved in a wide variety of clinical research projects studying macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, ocular injury, ocular tumors, and retinopathy of prematurity. With our commitment to improving therapy for patients with serious retinal disease by encouraging clinical research and education, VRS established the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity organization. The foundation has established a competitive research award to encourage young physicians to pursue a career in retinal research. Financial support for clinical research and education will allow us to continue to work toward improving the management and visual outcome of serious retinal disease.
