Who We Are
UnRestrict Minnesota marks a turning point in the reproductive freedom movement history as the largest coalition ever working together to advance abortion access in the state. The coalition includes groups who haven’t historically been involved in working on abortion rights and it is this multi-racial, cross-sector approach to movement building that makes this campaign the new progressive model for success.
With over twenty-five organizations in our unprecedented coalition, we are: activists, faith communities, LGBTQ advocates, doctors, abortion funds, lawyers, organizers, clinics, doulas, even podcasts—and more.
Our Mission & Vision
With your support, we work to protect, expand, and de-stigmatize access to abortion care—and all reproductive healthcare—in Minnesota through public education, advocacy, and the law.
Your gift helps us move closer to our vision of full reproductive justice, an organizing framework created by Black women where every person has the ability to decide if, when, and how to become a parent; raise healthy children in safe and thriving communities; and have gender freedom and bodily autonomy.
Roe v. Wade is Under Threat
The Supreme Court has sent a clear message that Roe v. Wade is no longer the law of the land. It refused to act to overturn an outrageous new law banning nearly all abortions in Texas, and it deputized anti-abortion activists to sue anyone who helps a person access abortion care in the state.
Texas's anti-abortion law has become a template for anti-abortion extremists in other states. The Dakotas are already working to outlaw abortion by replicating Texas's law.
Unfortunately, restrictions on abortion access in Minnesota make it difficult for many — especially those in marginalized communities — to access the care they need.
Minnesota's Abortion Restrictions
For years, anti-abortion legislators in Minnesota have been quietly passing laws that restrict abortion access, intimidate providers and patients, and increase the cost of care.
For example, current law mandates that doctors read a script that includes medically irrelevant and inaccurate information, including suggesting a false link between abortion and breast cancer. It’s a script designed to scare patients before receiving abortion care, not protect them.
Even if a doctor believes the information may cause harm to the patient, they could lose their license and be subject to felony penalties if they do not follow the script that is mandated by law.
Abortion is the ONLY medical procedure for which lawmakers have mandated exactly what doctors must tell their patients.
In addition to being unconstitutional, anti-abortion legislation contradicts the 75% of Minnesotans who agree that when a person has decided to have an abortion, it should be safe, legal, and free from punishment or judgment.
Anti-abortion laws take the decision over whether or when to become a parent away from individual Minnesotans and place it in the hands of politicians.
We're challenging these laws — and we have the momentum.
Our first-of-its-kind statewide coalition formed a critical mass at Reproductive Freedom Lobby Day, demonstrating the full force of our accelerating movement and rallying support for the Patients’ Right to Know Act and reproductive justice legislation.
I hope you’ll join this fight for reproductive freedom with a donation today.
Legislative Advocacy
On the eve of the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Minnesota State Senator Jeff Howe introduced the first of multiple outrageous bills in 2021 that would effectively ban abortion in Minnesota.
Right away, UnRestrict Minnesota launched a rapid response campaign to mobilize community leaders and grassroots supporters in key districts.
And we succeeded. We immediately stopped this bill in its tracks.
But we aren’t done. We also introduced the Patients’ Right to Know Act, a bill to repeal a disgraceful law that currently forces physicians to give medically inaccurate information to patients before providing abortion care.
Unfortunately, the entrenched power of anti-abortion politicians at the State Capitol isn’t going to allow this commonsense legislation to pass easily, so we need to build more grassroots support.
We're done letting politicians play politics with our reproductive care. That's why we're taking on anti-abortion extremists at the Minnesota legislature.
You can help ramp up our campaign to remove Minnesota’s antiquated restrictions on abortion with a donation today.
We won’t stop until ALL Minnesotans have full access to abortion care.
You have a place in our movement.
