High-Quality Learning—On and Off the Squash Court!

The Case for Beyond Walls

Beyond Walls empowers Twin Cities youth to thrive—academically, athletically, and personally—through a proven blend of academic support, character development, and the sport of squash. We inspire confidence, promote academic excellence, and open doors to post-secondary success.

We are intentionally an inch wide and a mile deep, investing deeply in each student from 6th grade through college entry. Our goal is simple but powerful: that 100% of our students graduate high school on time and successfully enroll in and complete a post-secondary educational opportunity.

Beyond Walls is part of a global network of more than 30 squash and education programs—and we’re proud to represent Minnesota in transforming lives both on and off the court.

The Need

Out-of-school-time programs like Beyond Walls have a direct and measurable impact on youth development, academic success, and community well-being. Research shows that youth who participate in structured after-school programs are more focused, perform better in school, and develop stronger social skills. Every dollar invested in these programs generates an estimated $10.51 return through improved educational outcomes, reduced crime, and increased lifetime earnings.

At Beyond Walls, 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, placing them at the highest risk for falling through the cracks of the opportunity gap. Yet when they are supported by positive adult mentors, academic guidance, and life-enriching experiences, they thrive—and inspire us all.

This year, your support will directly fund our two biggest needs:

  • Transportation to Programming: Our students travel across the Twin Cities to attend daily sessions at our partner site, the University of Minnesota. Reliable transportation ensures that every young person can access these critical academic, athletic, and mentoring opportunities—no matter the weather or distance.

  • External Travel Opportunities: Over the past six months, our students have represented Beyond Walls in Detroit, Massachusetts, and Chicago, gaining exposure to new cities, cultures, and college environments. Looking ahead, we’re preparing for trips to Milwaukee and Philadelphia—and we need your help to make these life-changing experiences possible.

Why Beyond Walls?

  1. Our students are on the University of Minnesota campus three times a week throughout the school year, receiving over 350 hours of direct service annually.

  2. Our program is led by experienced professionals with over 20 years in the national squash and education network.

  3. Squash provides a direct pipeline to colleges and universities that value character, commitment, and teamwork—and often provide generous scholarships.

  4. College mentors provide a 3:1 student-to-mentor ratio, building lasting relationships and accountability.

  5. Students engage in youth-led community service projects every 4–6 weeks, reinforcing leadership and civic responsibility.

  6. National and regional travel expands horizons, exposes students to diverse environments, and builds lifelong confidence.

  7. Students spend an average of five hours a week in physical activity through squash, promoting wellness and resilience.

Who Benefits

When our youth are supported to succeed, everyone benefits. Beyond Walls students are developing the academic, social, and leadership skills needed for college, careers, and life. In a future where 70% of jobs will require post-secondary education, we’re preparing our young people to lead—and to give back.

The return on investment is immense: healthier, safer, and more engaged communities; stronger families; and a generation of young leaders who understand the value of hard work, teamwork, and purpose.

Your Give to the Max Day gift will ensure our students have the transportation, opportunities, and mentorship they need to reach their full potential—both on and off the court.
