Seward Child Care Center has been fostering the development of the whole child through participatory democracy, anti-bias skills, and environmental awareness since 1973. Children, teachers, and parents work together to create a democratic environment.

How do your dollars support the staff and families at SCCC?

Like many child care centers, SCCC reduced it's capacity to meet COVID-19 safety guidelines. Due to the reduction in enrollment, our projected tuition income for 2021 is lower than it was in 2012.  Despite the challenges this year has brought us, our incredible teachers are committed to providing high quality care, meeting children's individual needs, and building and maintaining community with our awesome parent membership. Since at least 85% of our budget goes towards staff salaries and benefits, and we now have extra cleaning and safety costs, your financial support allows us to:

- maintain one of our greatest resources, our building! 

- support our staff's professional development

 - supply our classrooms with toys and materials that connect directly to children's interests

- re-establish and maintain our scholarship fund, so that we can be accessible to more families

What Makes Seward Child Care Center Unique?

• Parent-governed—the school was created by parents and is still governed by parents cooperatively
• Teacher run—the teachers have autonomy in running their classrooms, and decisions are made with the children’s needs first.
• Democratic participation—the Teacher Collective and Parent Cooperative allow children to experience democracy firsthand.
• Child-initiated learning—children learn to make decisions and choices within a safe and structured daily routine.
• Conflict resolution—An approach to conflict that encourages social skills and peaceful ways to resolve disputes.
